  7. Gandhi - The Beginning

    Gandhi - The Beginning

Last year, as part of All Indians Matter’s annual Gandhi series, we detailed the Mahatma’s final years and how pivotal they were – not just to India’s birth but also to the journey the country has travelled since then. This year, we go back to the start. This series, ‘Gandhi: The Beginning’, traces the early years of the Mahatma, starting with his grandfather and father – both great influences on his personality – as well as the family’s journey, Gandhi’s mother, his childhood and teenage, going all the way till the young boy from Porbandar turned into a political personality with his first satyagraha in South Africa. From this, we try to understand the making of Gandhi, the mass leader and Father of the Nation. At every point, we seek to make the conversation contemporary, linking it to present issues and debates. The hope is to peel away the layers of the persona to understand how Gandhi became the man that he came to be. Like every year, this is a series of conversations between Ashraf Engineer, host of the All Indians Matter podcast, and Tushar Gandhi, great grandson of the Mahatma, author and peace activist. This series is based on Volume 1 of Gandhi’s biography written by his secretary Pyarelal. It is called ‘Mahatma Gandhi – The Early Phase’. Pyarelal Ji is no longer with us, but this series is as much a tribute to his labour of love as it is to Gandhi.

  9. Bred To Lead | With Dr. Jake Tayler Jacobs

Bred To Lead | With Dr. Jake Tayler Jacobs

People aren’t born to lead; they’re bred to lead. Leadership isn’t some inherent quality coded into your DNA—it’s developed, honed, and forged through experiences, challenges, and intentional growth. Being “bred to lead” is about more than just having a title or natural charisma. It’s about embracing the grind, building resilience, and committing to the kind of personal development that molds someone into a true leader. Why “Bred to Lead” Matters More Than Being “Born to Lead”: When people say leaders are born, it implies that leadership is exclusive—something reserved for a select few. But “Bred to Lead” flips that notion on its head. It’s about recognizing that leadership potential is universal, but realizing it requires a process. No one simply wakes up one day as a great leader. Instead, it’s the intentional experiences—mentorship, adversity, education, and practice—that shape someone into a leader worth following. Think of it like this: a person might have natural talent, but talent alone doesn’t make a champion. Champions are bred through relentless training, countless hours of practice, and a mindset built for growth. Leadership is no different. It’s the result of a deliberate process, not a birthright. What It Really Means to Be “Bred to Lead”: Forged Through Adversity: Being “bred” suggests a process of refinement. It’s about going through setbacks, navigating crises, and coming out stronger. Great leaders aren’t the ones who never fail—they’re the ones who learn and evolve from every failure. Built by Purposeful Development: The “bred to lead” philosophy is rooted in the idea of intentional growth. This means placing people in environments that stretch them, giving them responsibilities that push their boundaries, and exposing them to the kind of guidance and mentorship that accelerates their development. Shaped by Experiences: Leaders aren’t made in a classroom or born with a skillset—they’re shaped in the field. Every tough decision, difficult conversation, and unexpected obstacle becomes part of the process that breeds someone into a leader. It’s not about being a “natural”—it’s about being someone who learns through doing. Driven by a Relentless Mindset: “Bred to Lead” also speaks to the mindset. It’s about a commitment to growth—never settling, never getting comfortable, and always striving to be better. It’s the mindset that says, “I wasn’t given this; I earned this.” The Beauty of “Bred to Lead”: The beauty of this concept is that it’s inclusive. It’s not about where you start—it’s about where you’re willing to go. Anyone, regardless of background, upbringing, or natural traits, can be bred to lead if they’re willing to go through the process. It’s a journey of growth that’s accessible to everyone who’s ready to put in the work and embrace the path. By emphasizing “Bred to Lead,” you’re making a powerful statement: leadership isn’t about who you are—it’s about who you’re becoming. It’s about dedication, resilience, and transformation. Being “bred to lead” means you’re shaped by every experience, and you carry the marks of every challenge you’ve faced. You’re not a leader by chance; you’re a leader by design. So, it’s not just that people aren’t born to lead—they don’t have to be. Because the real leaders are those who’ve been bred to rise up, forged in the fires of experience, and refined through continuous growth. And that’s a story that speaks to every aspiring leader, whether they’re just starting out or already on the path. It’s the ultimate equalizer in leadership: no matter where you begin, you can become Bred to Lead. Whether you’re a seasoned executive or a first-time manager, ”Bred to Lead” will help you unlock your full potential as a leader and build a culture of engagement, innovation, and purpose. Join Dr. Jake Tayler Jacobs on this transformative journey and discover how putting your people first can lead to game-changing results. Bredtolead.com

    The New Psychology of Depression

We live in a world filled with material wealth, live longer and healthier lives, and yet anxiety, stress, unhappiness, and depression have never been more common. What are the driving forces behind these interlinked global epidemics? In this series, Professor Mark Williams (Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow at Oxford University) and Dr Danny Penman discuss the recent scientific advances that have radically altered our understanding of depression and related disorders. Also discussed is the latest treatments and therapies that are offering hope to those suffering from depression. Professor Williams co-developed Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), a treatment for anxiety, stress and depression that is at least as effective as drugs at preventing new episodes of depression. It's now one of the preferred treatments for depression recommended by the UK's National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. The same technique, based upon an ancient form of meditation, can also help us cope more effectively with the relentless demands of our increasingly frantic world. Professor Williams and Dr Penman co-authored the bestselling book Mindfulness: Finding Peace in a Frantic World.

  1. Akbar Birbal Stories- Hindi Moral Tales

Akbar Birbal Stories- Hindi Moral Tales

Jalal-ud-din-Mohammad Akbar, also known as Akbar, was one of the most famous Mughal kings and he reigned India during the 16th century. Akbar, unlike other Mughal emperors, was keen to have talented people in his court irrespective of their religion. He had nine gems in his court and amongst them, Birbal was widely considered the most intelligent. A Brahmin by birth, Birbal’s original name was Mahesh Das and he met Akbar first time when he helped Akbar and his courtiers find the way back to their kingdom after having lost their way while on a hunting trip. Akbar and Birbal’s friendship lasted for 30 years before Birbal became a casualty of a war with North West tribes and it is said that Akbar went into a deep mourning for 2 days on hearing this and didn’t eat any food. Numerous Akbar Birbal stories from this time have been passed on from one generation to another in which Akbar will test Birbal’s skills by throwing him into tricky situations and Birbal had to use his wit to get out of them. Chimes Radio brings a collection of such bedtime stories for kids to enjoy. 15. J.D. Souther - Audio Biography

    J.D. Souther - Audio Biography

J.D. Souther (born November 2, 1945) is an influential American singer-songwriter and musician, celebrated for his pivotal role in shaping the country rock genre during the 1970s. Born in Detroit, Michigan, and raised in Amarillo, Texas, Souther emerged from a musically rich background that fostered his early interest in songwriting and performance. His career was notably intertwined with the Los Angeles music scene, particularly at the Troubadour, where he collaborated with iconic artists such as Glenn Frey and Jackson Browne, forming the folk duo Longbranch/Pennywhistle and significantly contributing to the emergence of the California sound.  Souther is perhaps best known for his songwriting prowess, having penned numerous hits for himself and others, including the Eagles' classics "Heartache Tonight" and "New Kid in Town." His lyrical depth and emotional resonance have garnered him widespread acclaim, earning him a place in the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013.  While his early career flourished, Souther took a notable hiatus from the music industry from 1984 to 2008, during which he focused on his personal life and acting roles, including appearances in popular television series like Thirtysomething and Nashville.  Despite his withdrawal from the spotlight, Souther's influence remained strong, with his songs recorded by renowned artists like George Strait and Linda Ronstadt, further solidifying his legacy in the music industry.[6]  His return to music has been marked by the release of several acclaimed albums and continued touring, reaffirming his status as a vital figure in American music. Souther's career has not been without controversy; he has often expressed ambivalence about the fame and pressures of the music industry, leading to introspective commentary on his life and artistry.[8]  His enduring impact on the country rock genre and his collaborations with legendary artists highlight his significance in the evolution of contemporary music. Early Life and Education J.D. Souther was born on November 2, 1945, in Detroit, Michigan, but he spent his formative years in Amarillo, Texas . Coming from a musical family, Souther's father, John, was a big band singer who later opened a music store in Amarillo called Texas Musical Instruments. This environment nurtured Souther's early interest in music; he began playing in orchestra during fourth grade with a handmade violin that belonged to his paternal grandmother. By fifth grade, he switched to the clarinet and later took up the drums while attending Tascosa High School[1] . Souther's musical lineage continued with his sister, Susan, who was a choir director and accompanist, along with several other family members who were popular musicians in Amarillo . After graduating from high school, Souther enrolled at Amarillo College, expressing pride in his educational beginnings there. However, he left college to pursue a musical career, traveling to California with a group of fellow Amarillo musicians in a band called The Kitchen Cinq. Although they signed with producer Lee Hazelwood, the band did not achieve significant success in Los Angeles, Souther met Glenn Frey, a fellow musician from Detroit, and they became roommates and collaborators. They performed as a folk duo named Longbranch Pennywhistle, playing at the iconic Troubadour in Hollywood, where many influential artists of the time regularly performed. This experience proved to be a crucial phase in Souther's development as a songwriter and musician, as he described their time there as his "university" of music Career Beginnings JD Souther's career in music began in the vibrant environment of Los Angeles during the 1970s, where he was deeply influenced by the local music scene. He frequented the Troubadour, a legendary venue, which became a formative experience for him. "Hanging out in the bar at the Troubadour with Glenn Frey and Jackson Browne... it was the best study in songwriting I can imagine," Souther recalled, emphasizing the impact of meeting iconic artists such as Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Neil Young during this time . It was at this venue that he cultivated his craft, eventually forming the duo Longbranch/Pennywhistle with Frey, which showcased their songwriting abilities and caught the attention of music industry insiders. Souther nearly became a member of the Eagles during the group's formation but recognized after a brief tryout that his inclusion would not be a good fit. Reflecting on this experience, he stated, "I think I was in the band for one day... I figured we were going to keep writing together anyway, so I think we all got the best of that situation. This close association with the Eagles and other musicians solidified his place within the burgeoning country rock genre. While Souther enjoyed collaborating with other songwriters, he also took a step back from the intense demands of touring and recording. In a candid interview, he described taking a lengthy hiatus from 1984 to 2008, stating, “I said, ‘I’m going to step off the hamster wheel for a while... and I frankly had a pretty blissful 12, 14, 20 years, really’ . This break allowed him to focus on life outside of music, although he continued to write and have his songs performed by major artists like George Strait and Trisha Yearwood. In addition to his musical pursuits, Souther ventured into acting, starting with a role in the television series "Thirtysomething" in 1989 and later appearing in the first season of "Nashville" in 2012. He described his transition into acting as a natural progression, stating, "The acting stuff came because someone asked me... there’s absolutely no reason to say no to people of that quality when they ask you to be in their films" Songwriting and Collaborations Early Influences and Troubadour Scene J.D. Souther's songwriting career began in the vibrant Troubadour scene of the late 1960s, where he rubbed shoulders with legendary artists like Glenn Frey, Jackson Browne, and Linda Ronstadt. This environment served as a "university" for Souther, fostering his songwriting skills through collaboration and exposure to diverse musical styles.  It was during this time that he and Frey formed the folk duo Longbranch/Pennywhistle, producing a self-titled album in 1970 that, although commercially unsuccessful, laid the groundwork for their future endeavors.[9] Collaborations with Notable Artists Souther's songwriting prowess shone brightly in collaborations with various prominent musicians. One of his most notable contributions is the hit song “Heartache Tonight,” co-written with Frey, Henley, and Bob Seger. The track, inspired by Sam Cooke, exemplifies the effective collaboration among the artists, resulting in a country-rock anthem that remains popular to this day.  His partnership with the Eagles continued to flourish, as he brought forth significant songs like “New Kid in Town,” which captured the essence of the fleeting nature of fame and love. Contributions to the Eagles Despite his modesty, Souther's contributions to the Eagles were pivotal. During the recording of their iconic album Hotel California, he presented a song that left the band in awe, emphasizing his role as a hidden gem in the songwriting world. The song’s contemplation of love and fame mirrored the band's own experiences in a rapidly changing musical landscape.  This collaboration not only enhanced the Eagles' discography but also solidified Souther's reputation as a talented songwriter. Later Works and Influence In the years following his initial successes, Souther continued to pen songs that would become staples for other artists, including George Strait and Brooks & Dunn, selling millions of records in the process.  He also ventured into acting, appearing in projects like Thirtysomething and Postcards from the Edge, which expanded his artistic influence beyond music  His ability to evoke deep emotional responses in his songwriting has been consistently recognized, as seen in his poignant track “You’re Only Lonely,” which reflects a sense of isolation and longing that resonates with many listeners. Legacy and Recognition Souther's impact on the country-rock genre and the broader music scene is undeniable. His collaborative efforts not only helped define the sound of the Eagles but also paved the way for future generations of songwriters. His self-deprecating nature, combined with an impressive catalog of work, has established him as a revered figure in the music industry, often credited as an architect of the California sound without fully realizing the influence he wielded at the time. Solo Career J.D. Souther's solo career began with the release of his self-titled debut album in 1972 under David Geffen's Asylum Records, featuring notable tracks like "Run Like a Thief," which would later be covered by Bonnie Raitt, and "How Long," frequently performed by the Eagles during their live shows and later included on their 2007 album, Long Road Out of Eden.  His second album, Black Rose, was released in 1976 and included a duet with Linda Ronstadt, "If You Have Crying Eyes," solidifying his presence in the country rock genre.  Souther's third album, You're Only Lonely (1979), marked a significant milestone in his career, yielding his biggest solo hit, the title track, which peaked at number seven on the US Billboard Hot 100 and dominated the Adult Contemporary chart for five weeks. The song showcased his knack for writing poignant ballads, a hallmark of his songwriting style, often focusing on themes of heartbreak and emotional turmoil. Souther's next album, Home By Dawn (1984), continued to showcase his evolving artistry, though he would take a long hiatus from recording until his 2008 release If The World Was You.  During his absence from the music scene, Souther engaged in various pursuits, including acting in television and films.
